Biography:
Kamel Ariffin is a native of the state of Selangor, born in Beranang and started schooling in Kajang. His secondary education was at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar. After finishing his HSC studies he went to the University of Malaya to begin his tertiary education in 1969. He graduated with a BA degree in mathematics three years later.

He landed his first job at the Bank Negara Malaysia as an executive officer. After a short stint in the bank he joined the then College of Agriculture Malaya as an Assistant Lecturer. After a three-year service he went to further his studies at the University of Western Ontario in Canada. Upon finishing his MA degree program he returned to the college which by then has been elevated to a university called the University of Agriculture Malaysia (UPM) to take up the post of lecturer in mathematics.

In 1981 he once again went abroad to pursue a research program studies leading to a PhD. Specializing in number theory he secured a PhD degree from the University of New South Wales in 1984 and recommence teaching in UPM at the end of that year.

Throughout his service in UPM he has also held several administrative duties. These included the posts of head of department, deputy dean of faculty of science, the director of the centre of matriculation studies, deputy vice-chancellor of UPM in charge of academic affairs and research and the director of Institute for Mathematical Research of the university. The last of these he currently holds.
