Description:
Keio University is a comprehensive academic enterprise with five major campuses, along with a number of affiliated academic institutions. It was founded in 1858 in Edo (now Tokyo) by Yukichi Fukuzawa (1835-1901), an intellectual giant and unchallenged leader of the nation of the time, whose portrait is
widely known as has it been used in ten-thousand Japanese yen note since 1984. The university covers a broad spectrum of academic fields by nine undergraduate and eleven graduate programs and schools, leading to degrees in letters, human relations, business and commerce, business administration, economics, law, media and governance, medicine, health management, and science and technology. Keio's collaboration with industry has also been important since its inception, to pursue Yukichi Fukuzawa's spirit of "jitsugaku," - one should not just acquire information from book learning, but learn from real-life experiences in order to apply viable solutions to actual problems. Research institutes most active in business-academia collaboration include, Keio Leading-edge Laboratory of Science and Technology (KLL), Keio Research Institute at SFC, and Center for Integrated Medical Research attached to the University Hospital.
