Biography:
Dr. Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the School of Distance Education (SDE), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Penang, Malaysia, where he has been attached to since completing his doctoral studies at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, in July 1998.

Earlier, he had graduated from the University of Oxford (B.A. Hons. Philosophy, Politics and Economics) and the University of Leeds (M.A. Politics of International Resources and Development).

His main interest lies in the field of political Islam. He has presented papers at numerous international conferences in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Germany, China, the USA, Vietnam and Australia.

In April – September 2008, he collaborated with international colleagues in a research project, Transnational Islam in South and Southeast Asia: Movements, Networks and Conflict Dynamics, sponsored by the National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR), USA. His output, ‘Transnational Islam in Malaysia’, has been published as a chapter in a volume, Transnational Islam in South and Southeast Asia: Movements, Networks and Conflict Dynamics (Seattle: NBR, 2009).

In 2008-09 also, he completed visiting fellowships at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, and the Asia Research Institute (ARC), Murdoch University, Perth, Australia. During his sabbatical leave outside Malaysia, he presented papers at his host institutions and at academic events held at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) and the Asia Research Institute (ARI), National University of Singapore (NUS) in Singapore and at the Japan International Cooperation Agency Research Institute (JICA-RI), Tokyo.

He has published internationally in such journals as Studia Islamika (Jakarta), Indonesia and the Malay World (London), Islamic Culture (Hyderabad), The Islamic Quarterly (London), Kajian Malaysia (Penang), Asian Studies Review (Brisbane), Review of Indonesian and Malaysian Affairs (Canberra), Southeast Asian Studies (Kyoto), Journal of Asian and African Studies (London), Contemporary Southeast Asia (Singapore), ASIEN: The German Journal on Contemporary Asia (Hamburg) and Islamic Studies (Islamabad), of which he is also a member of its International Advisory Board.
