The UP Jorge B. Vargas Museum and Filipiniana Research Center will formally open
Muling Ptyk: Da Art of Nonoy Marcelo on 27 June 2008, Friday, 6:00 PM at The Edge
Gallery (G/F) in line with the University of the Philippines’ Centenary. National artists
Virgilio Almario and BenCab will grace the opening event as guests of honor.

Muling Ptyk, a take off from his prize winning book Huling Ptyk - Da Art of Nonoy
Marcelo, features original drawings from the private collection of Atty. Saul Hofileña.
Although the collection is only but a fragment of the artworks he has done since the
1960s, it gives the audience a sampling of Marcelo's wit and artistry, something which
has entertained Filipinos for four decades. Tisoy, Aling Otik, Kinse, Ikabod and his
lovable Bubwits of Dagalandia are but a few of his memorable comic characters that
became part of the everyday Filipino lives. He was a cultural avatar whose art reflected
contemporary Philippine reality more effectively than most “serious” social critics.

Severino “Nonoy” Marcelo taught film animation at the UP College of Fine Arts and was
responsible for introducing significant innovations in the film animation course of the
college. He was the only Asian cartoonist featured in Time Magazine for its cover story
“Mighty Pens” for his bold commentaries on the current socio-political state of the
country through his comic strips. He received the Catholic Mass Media Award Best
Comic Strip Award in 1986 and 1988 and the Cultural Center of the Philippines’
Parangal Sentenyal sa Sining at Kultura in 1999.

Muling Ptyk will run until 23 August 2008. The museum is open from Tuesday
