UNIMAS first university to sell COOP 1Malaysia products

Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) yesterday officially became the first university in Malaysia to sell COOP 1Malaysia products.

In congratulating the university, Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said selling the products could be a way to beef up the income of its students.

“I wish to congratulate Unimas for being the first to sell the products which are 30 to 40 per cent cheaper than other products without the brand,” said Sabri after launching the ‘Gerakan Pengguna Siswa (GPS)’ and Menu Rakyat 1Malaysia (MR1M) in Unimas yesterday.

He also said all COOP 1Malaysia products in Sarawak are sold at the same price as those in west Malaysia.

“Students now have the choice to buy products which are cheaper,” he said, alluding to the burden that students had to bear due to the escalating cost of living.

On the prices of certain goods, he said they could not be controlled by the government.

“Most of our goods are imported from outside, and when the country of origin increases the prices, there is no doubt that the price in our local market will also be increased,” said Ismail, refuting popular claims that the government was to blame for the increase in prices.

The event was also attended by the Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim, Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office Datuk Naroden Majais, Unimas vice chancellor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Ab Hamid, state KPDNKK director Wan Uzir Wan Sulaiman and KPDNKK secretary-general Datuk Saripuddin Kasim.
